时间:2018-08-11 17:10  作者:David  来源:www.2abc8.com

Wolves once were plentiful in Yellowstone National Park, but by 1926,humans had hunted them to extinction(灭绝)there. The absence of wolves infuenced many parts of the Yellowstone ecosystem(生态 系统).Most importantly, the disappearance of wolves led to a huge increase in the number of deer. This in turn had a bad influence on plants and animals in the park.

Park managers tried to keep the deer population under control by hunting, but it produced disappointing results. In the late 1960s and 1970s,the U. S. government began considering a new policy (政策).They wanted to return to natural ways to deal with the deer in the park. In 1995,the gray wolf was reintroduced to Yellowstone. The first wolves were brought in from Canada a year later.

Almost immediately the park managers noticed differences in the park. As a result of the reintroduction of wolves, the number of deer declined. This led to an unexpected change. The number of willow trees, which deer eat, increased. Beavers (河理),which feed on willows, in turn grew in number. In addition, the populations of some kinds of songbird and small animals that live in the trees have since grown.

Other animals and people have benefited (受益),too. Scavengers, animals that eat dead animals, have increased in number. And visitors to Yellowstone are able to see and hear wolves in the park again.
